Space settings

These settings belong to the space, so every scene in it shares them: background, grid, units, lighting, fog and camera.

In the panel, background, grid and units are in the Workspace section. Lighting and fog are in Environment.

Background

Choose a Skybox:

SkyboxWhat you get
Color (color)One flat colour.
Gradient (gradient)A top colour fading into a bottom colour.
Texture (texture)An image or an environment map.
None (none)No background. In AR, the camera image shows through.
In AR, you almost always want None

A background fills the space behind your content. In an AR scene, that covers the real world. None lets the camera image through.

Grid

The grid helps you while you edit. Visitors never see it.

SettingWhat it does
VisibilityShows or hides the grid.
Grid typeThe plane it lies in: XZ (the floor), XY or YZ.
SnapObjects snap to the grid while you drag them.
Scale labelsLabels the grid divisions.
Grid distanceHow far out the grid fades away.
OriginThe colour, size and opacity of the marker at the centre of the world.

Turn on Snap early. Objects that are almost lined up look like a mistake, and fixing them later means moving them one at a time.

Units

Choose metres, centimetres, millimetres, feet, inches or pixels. Every measurement in the editor uses this unit, including the real-world size of triggers.

Wrong units mean wrong sizes in AR

The engine works in metres. If you model in centimetres but enter a trigger's size as if it were metres, your content appears a hundred times too big. Pick the unit you use for the real object, and stick with it.

Environment lighting

Environment Light uses an HDRI (a panoramic image of real lighting) or another image to light the scene. It is the biggest single improvement you can make to how a scene looks. It lights objects from every direction, which makes metal and glossy surfaces look right.

SettingWhat it does
MapThe HDRI or image.
IntensityHow strong the light is.
VisibilityOn or off.

Ambient light

Ambient Light adds one flat colour everywhere, with a colour and an intensity. It is simpler than an environment map, but it costs little and is useful for lightening shadows.

Fog

SettingWhat it does
VisibilityOn or off.
ColourThe colour that far-away objects fade into.
Start / EndWhere the fog begins, and where it is complete.
Apply fog to skyboxWhether the background fades too.

Set the fog colour to match your background. Far-away objects then fade into the horizon instead of ending sharply.

Camera

Mode sets which camera opens on the visitor's device: Auto (by trigger), Front or Back. Face filter scenes need Front.
